BAAT Network men's Conference
"Moving forward together"
Saturday 4th Dec 9.45 - 16.00

The BAAT Network is 5 years old and in that time nearly 300 Black and Asian therapists in the UK have either listed themselves in the directory as qualified therapists that are offering a service to the public or have become a supporter of BAATN. I was amazed to discover that 28% of these members are men. That compares with say 23% of the UKCP membership being men. That means there are 64 Black and Asian male therapists in the network; I was amazed at the numbers myself.

The time is right therefore to have a meaningful gathering of Black and Asian male therapists in the network. This is a rare opportunity to come together, share our knowledge, tell our stories, feel connected and gain mutual support and inspiration.

The speakers for this gathering will be:

Dr. Farhad Dalal, author of ‘Taking the group seriously’ and ‘Race, Colour and the Processes of Racialisation’

Rotimi Akinsete, counsellor and clinical supervisor with experience in race relations and leadership facilitation, training and advice and trustee of the Waterloo Community Counselling Centre

Eugene Ellis, Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and founder of the BAAT Network with a speacial interest in facilitating a dialouge around race and culture in organisations and psychotherapy trainings.

I am always deeply enriched by the experiences of these gatherings over the years and am looking forward to this gathering in particular because of the richness that it could potentially unlock. There will, as always with these gatherings, be plenty of time to network and talk to each other.

The food once again will be culturally focused and delicious.

Bursary for ethnic minority student

Following the untimely death of Jafar Kareem in 1992, a Fund was set up in his memory by his family and friends.  The main purpose of the Fund was to provide bursaries to ethnic minority students to help with the costs of their psychotherapy training. The trustees intend to award one bursary of between £1000 and £3000 to an ethnic minority student in 2010-11. The student should have completed at least two years of a qualifying course in psychodynamic psychotherapy (accredited by BPC or CPJA).

Please bring this bursary to the attention of anyone who could benefit from it.
